first story board

This is our begining of our first story board however different ideas have developed so we started again with our second story board

lighting

We might use a small flood light to create more lighting outside the tent so when filming inside the tent the light outside creates the morning light effct coming through the the tent, giving off a glowing light.

updated prop and costume list

For props we need items and other things to make the inside of our setting look like there has been sort of apocalypse these may include:
- Big boxes of simple and cheap food like soup.
-Messy empty boxes.
-Messy toiletries.
-Clothes.
-Debri.

We also need props to develop the character of our character and things he does such as the trap, for this we need:
-Axe - Adam
-White lense - Gil
-Tent - Gil
-Strings - Mima
-Bell - Frankie
-Cans - Owen

clothing:

dark coloured trackies and hoodie
big leather boots
chains

Monday 3 December 2012

For our casting we decided to use adam (our media teacher) this is because he is suited well to our theme and idea that we came up with for what we wanted our character to look like, in the shoot he is wearing a contact lenses, various fake scars, and baggy clothing and big dirty boots.
We also agreed that Ewhurst place is the best place to shoot in because Cornhill and Bweb (the other houses) had too big hall ways and that i wouldn't look as effective with the string, Ewhurst had a long wooden corridor that would look better if we filled with a lot of string to make it more bold, it also has a large wooden door that we can use for the end clip.

28 days later

28 days later is an sic-fi horror about an a man who wakes up in deserted london. This is an apocalypse film which relates very well to my horror ideas although you don't know what is outside the building with the tent it in, it gives off the impression that is a 'end of the world' film. Our film is an isolation film which is very much a like to 28 days later in the sense that they aren't isolated but just feel it because there are very few people left alive after the apocalypse.

trap inspiration

We came up with the trap idea with inspiration from a spider web, we want the trap to look like it has been there for sometime with different sounding items like bells and can hanging off them, we want the string to look scattered and messy but covering a large area. It is almost like the idea of a human spider web because its going to be of such a large scale.

importance of story boarding

Story boarding is an important technique because it helps you prepare yourself for what your film is going to look like. It also makes sure that you dont forget any small scenes or movements for when you start filming, Its an easy way of organising your filming process. Our storyboarding sheets have; shot number, location, action, shot/movement, sound, lighting, edit transition, timing and a area to draw out the scene.
After doing our initial storyboarding we realised that we missed a lot of parts out of out it which meant that we had to keep re-writing out the storyboard again to make sure its perfect. A part which was hard to do was the timing because its hard to judge how long the shot will actually go on for.
It was interesting to see how many different shots there were in a scene and how you can tell if one shot should be split in to more than one.

developed best idea for thriller

After our first pitching our ideas lesson we sat down as a group and discussed as a group, Me Gil, Owen and Frankie, and we pulled together our strongest ideas that we had.
This was mainly the tent idea. We new that we wanted to use the tent idea in our thriller but we wanted to make it strange so we decided to have the tent inside a house. This makes the idea questionable to the audience which makes it more strange.
Our main character and only character is a middle ages man with: a beard, scard face, funny eyes and wear a convict suit.
For the tent we decided that we would get a large tent with different compartment for his kitcken bed room sitting room all inside the tent. The tent is also going to look extremely messy and look like it has been lived in for a long time. this would have hundreds of lines of strings leading off the tent to different areas of the hall like a trap.
As a set we wanted to use a big old fashioned house with a large door leading into a big hall way with stairs ways going around the room with a the tent in the middle. this would be ideal if we used the string idea because it would look almost like a spider web effect.
The plot is that the man in the tent wakes up after hearing one of the strings go off then gets out of his tent into the hall way of a large old dusty house, this is when dogs start to howl outside the house doors and the man grabs his axe.

First pitching of our ideas:

Yesterdays lesson my group; Owen, Frankie and me presented out two strongest ideas to Matt and Adam (the media teachers).

In our group we first discussed our two main ideas; the D of E idea and then Babysitting idea.

The D of E idea
12 students 2 teachers, set in a campsite in the woods
first shot one of the teachers waking up inside the tent drugged and confused with thats going on- bright reflecting light inside the tent.
teacher gets out of tent see the camp site trashed and all tents ripped and broke- shot in P.O.V, blurry and unfocused and wobbly because of drugged teacher.
teacher realises all students and other teacher has gone
he starts to run out of campsite into forset to find kids stubbling, handle shot, deap breathing
flask back of the night before 12 student 2 teachers around campfire happy and singing
back to handheld running
teacher stops and see something infront of him, stops and adjusts his eyes from being blurry, realises there is a lake with two of the kids floating dead in the lake
close up reaction shot
pan around the area and see a few more kids hanging dead

This we decided was our strongest idea, Matt and Adam agreed that they liked the tent idea and waking up drugged up. They also pointed out that it wouldnt be possible to film people floating in a lake in January when filming it because of the weather being too cold- we agreed with this as well. They also brought up that it would be better if we didnt have handhand running but filming the teacher running through the woods from behind to make it look like someone maybe watching him. Another thing that was brought up in our discussion was that the close up reaction could potentially look fake and unrealistic if not acted well. After talking about this idea we came to conculsion that we would come up with 6 other ideas after the tent to see if we could come up with any different conclusions.

Babysitter idea
1 teenager girl 1 baby girl, set at home at babys house
teenager watching tv/baby finger printing on table next to her
Tv starts to go fuzzy and power turns of, teenager tells baby to stay there whilst she trys to get a tourch and sort power out
handheld with tourch shows ways down the corridor
goes down stairs still with no light and tourch to find baby
baby isnt there
teenager runs up the stairs shouting her name looking for her, she sees hand and finger prints with paint along the banistair and walls, she follows them
they lead into bath room but no baby in there
image of baby standing behind her reflects in the mirror with babys messed up face

Adam and Matt liked the idea of the finger painting creating a path for the teenager to follow, and the hand prints scraped along the walls. They didnt think that the baby in the mirror idea was very strong and we agreed that it could look quite fake, cliche and typical.

After the meeting we put all the ideas that they liked together, we figured that the hand printing idea from the Babysitter could work well in the D of E idea but using footprints instead of hand prints. we are going to come up with some more ideas for the D of E idea that we can merge in.

SEMIOLOGY

Semiology is the study of signs. All humans create meaning for different signs they see without realising. For example; a heart means romance, having a shot of a knife automatically gives off the impression that someone is about to get murdered. A lot of things you see on TV you create meaning for without thinking about it, this is because the media use these signs the way you see them to create obvious meaning for the audience.
We also create steriotypical images of people, for example; if we see hooded teenaged boys in black and looking suspicious we automatically feel as though they are going to do something bad.
= LOVE
=MURDER

Camera lesson with Adam- different shots

Close-up- head and shoulders, can be used to make dramatic tension or revealing moments. Close shots work to increase audience indentification with a character.

Mid-shot- down to the waist. gives of body language and shows clothing and style of the character.

Wide-shot- shows location and a wider vision and scene. Often used at the begining of a scene and at end. Also sets atmosphere.

Big close-up- head or part of the head, this is to show emotion and detail of someone.

Medium close-up- head and shoulders to top pocket, used for alround shots.

Over the shoulder- this hekps create the dynamic between the character and what they are seeing, it almost puts you in there body. It is used a lot to suggest that someone is being followed or watched by an unseen presence.

Low angle- camera points up from eyeline. Can indicate high status or if someone is powerfull or intimidating.

High-angle- camera points down from above eyeline. looking down on someone can indicate that someone is low status or show their vunerability.

Long shot- full figure i shot. gives meaning to where the person is and their location. it can often be used to distance the audiencefrom events or suggest loneliness or isolation.

Point of view- provides perspective from a particular characters point of view.

Two shot, Three shot- by framing two or more characters in the same shot shows how the characteres relate to each other.

Medium-long shot-  including knees. provides more physical information than the mid shot but less close up detail.

'Kill Bill: Vol 1'

The first 42 seconds shows the three men hammering the woman in the coffin. At the same time it playing disturbing slow whistling pan pipe music, which is very western style, the whole set is all very western, with the male characters dresses in cowboy hats and she is wearing cowboy boots.

The hammering starts to speed up when you can see only a slight gap left to close; this is when you can hear the woman groaning and breathing heavily. the volume on the last nail has been altered and made lounder to create a scared effect for the audience.

At 43 seconds the pan pipe music stops and allows you to hear the back ground sounds, like a dog barking. At this point you can hear the men shoveling mud on her coffin, this creates a scratchy sound caused by the gravel and shovel. This made the audience concentrate because its a big build up, this is an interesting a scene because it isnt usual for Hollywood films to have a blanc screen for such a long period which could have made it quite risky.

PRELIMARY TASK

PAGE ONE

For our prelim task we were put in for 3 groups of 4. In the group I was in we had Helena being director, Alex being a camera operator and me and Gil were actors. At the beginning we were given a story board which looked like this:

For out set we used the TV studio, this had a set that was already in place for the activity. We decided that for our act we would set it in modern day times so we wore youthful clothing and for our prop we used a condom. The camera we used was a Sony NX5 with a tripod, we had to set everything up at the begining like, white balance and focusing before filming each scene.
PAGE TWO
We had to get in 3 different main shots; over the shoulder, wide shot and close up. Each time we filmed a shot we filmed the whole sequence in the shot to prevent jumpy editing. The first shot we did did was the wide shot there were 4 scenes that we needed but we filmed the whole sequence from the begining. Wide shot is used so the audience can see a lot more of the set and actors, directors use the wide shots so they can fit a lot more in the scene. We then went on to doing over the shoulder shots which there were 4 of them too. Over the should shots allows the audience to become closer to the audience and feel as if they are getting the same view as the actor are. The last shot we had to use was close up, we used close up 4 times. This is used to capture feelings and emotions facially, we used it when Gill and i were in a conversation, we also used close up of our main prop, the condom which creates meaning for the audience. When filming in the shot we selected we didnt change the position of it at all, this meant that sometimes although we still ran the whole scene together we werent always in the shot. We also added in one last shot which was silmed through curtain blinds over the shoulder, this automatically gives the audience the feel as if someone was watching the actors.

Although i was infront of the camera, there was only four of us so we all had to control the camera together, and organise and direct as a group. i was also watching how to operate the camera and vocally helped Alex with the decisions for the shots.

CAMERA LESSON 2

The second lesson we were taught about the different frame shots, such as; close up, mid-shot and wide shot. We shot the same sequence in all three shots but tried to keep the continuity the same so we could crop and edit the frames in during the sequence, continuity is something that is very important whilst repeat filming, this is why we used white tape to mark out where the main things happen so they happen in the same places. For the zoomed in shot we had to focus the camera first by zooming into something focusing and the zooming out. We also learnt about the different rolls in media, for example, being a director or filmier.

CAMERA LESSON 1

On Friday the 7th we had our first technical camera lesson. The first thing we learnt was how to set up the tri-pod and how to attach the camera to it (we use a Sony NX5- a low grade professional camera), whilst changing the height of the tri-pod how to fit the battery in. The technician explained about the three main dials on the lenses; focusing, zooming and exposure. Then we went on to learn about the white balance button, this sets the colouring balance right and stopped it going a greeny/blue colouring. To do this someone has to stand in front of the camera whilst the filmier would zoom in on something white, like a white piece of paper or a white wall.

Hello
My name is Jemima Roblin and i am studying; media studies, textiles and photography at Hurtwood House. Before Hurtwood i went to Bedales, i moved to Hurtwood to study more art based subjects such as Media, this is because when i leave school i would like to be in the media. i chose to do those three subjects because i think that thet all link together well, espeshially media and photography because the camera work is very simular and therefore i can get to understand it quicker, textiles is also goes well with media because it brings creative side to the films and shots.

I enjoy most genres of films especially thrillers, action, comedy and romcoms. I really enjoy watching a broad range of films and talking to others about how they felt about it. i like to analyze films and think about why the director decided to do something and how they did it, i find it interesting finding out things how the shot some shots.
