Our chosen singer (Cece Green)

We have chosen our artist who we are promoting, we all think she fits in well for the look we want with the long dark hair. She is not stereotypical looking but he look is alternative and interesting and I think that we could make her look strange for the video if we dress her up and put dark and pale makeup on her.

The boy clips

As a group we decided that we wanted one more character to be casted in our music video. We also decided that we want it to go along the theme of someone who is mental or in a mental hospital, this is where we thought that throughout the video that the various clips we use will create a story. We the first clip to start of with a boy standing facing a dirty white blank wall and it to pan out so we can see the scale of it. As the video goes on the wall is going to increase with writing on it, we are going to think of a fraise that is going to be repeated over and over the wall until the last clip of him will be another pan out of the room completely covered with the writing.

target audience

As our song genre is very contemporary and original as it is Rock/Dance. I think our target audience would be teenagers between the ages of 15-25. As the track is very young and modern. Also as our idea is quite dark and mysterious I think we would target the subculture of Indie kids, and gothic-hipsters.

"Hipster refers to a postmodern subculture of young, urban middle-class adults and older teenagers that appeared in the 1990s, being derived from earlier movements in the 1940s. The subculture is associated with indie music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibilityprogressive or independent political views "

I think our music video would target both genders equally but mainly females as the singer is female and has role model qualities as she is a trend setter as she is different. I think that women would respond better to this than men. And woman generally responds better to other woman.

I think our music video would appeal to all the classes, as the genre is not distinctive to a set class.

Bugs

We have decided that because we are shooting part of the video in the woods that we could use some sort of bugs, obviously they are scary and off putting which is why we think they will work well with our theme.

caterpillars at the beginning --> butterflies coming out of her hands at the end
maggots
ants
worms
snakes

second meeting with Luke

We decided that we need another meeting with Luke to talk through ideas as we found that our video didnt link and we didnt have anything holding up our video.
He still liked the idea of having the artist at the beginning flickering closer and further away whilst lip singing, he also still liked the idea of using weird twins and dancers.
We are going to shoot in the woods for the singer and then create a dirty old room in the studio for the dancers, we also want to use a ink and oil effect which will be running down the walls whilst the dancers and dancing.
We came to the conclusion that we need one or two more weird acts otherwise it could get a little bit repetitive, I think we are still planning to use a grandpa and insects and potentially have a seriously strange person just doing weird things like laughing and eating insects, we would need someone who is a really good actress, but I personally feel like the more irrelevant things we have in the it the more it will link.

decision making

At the moment we have no completely decided on an idea that has really set us completely going. We have come up with the idea of using a mental institution where we go into different rooms (which is the studio) with different people doing weird things in the rooms, like having fits, coughing up blood and other strange things that crazy people do.

Another idea which we have is nor portray a story line but we just have lots of different clips of weird crazy things going on in different clips, this is more along the lines of having of weird wacky shots instead of going for the general scary clips.

song choice

Before we chose our song choice we decided on our theme, this was obviously going to be a weird and strange so we had to base our song on our idea first which meant we had to find one that fitted our concept.
We looked at various different songs by Ben Pierce, other house and electronic artist including various other songs by Santigold, we were torn between Santigolds song 'starstruck' and Ben Pierces' song 'what I might do' this is when we decided that 'What I might do' was too pop and not edgy enough for what we were looking for.
After deciding that 'Starstruck' might be the best song choice for our theme we played the song over Die Antwoords song 'I fink your freaky' video we realised that it would actually work well with the song and ideas we came up with.

Emily Tedrake - Polydor records talk

Today we had a talk from Emily Tedrake from Poldor records, she is the video commissioner which is from a major record label of universal music video - Time Warner conglomerate. She spoke to us about the process of commissioning a music video.

Usually the budgets for music videos are set from 1,000 to  100,000. this is based on projected record sales, and how big the artist wants the video, for example James Blake's video was used as a pro, otional tool, and so it was apart of his marketing campaign, so the money would take longer than usual to regain, as a result of this the video was set to a lower budget than usual.

Once approached by the artist and given the rough idea, Emily picks a few directors she think suit the style and ask them to write up a treatment, this I thought was very interesting to look at as she brought in a few examples from Ellie Goulding and James Blakes videos, this gave us an idea of how we were to set out our treatment for out video. In each treatment the directors gives a brief outline of the music video, which is usually backed up by images and videos to help give a realistic feel for the style they want. they also use specific references for the location of the video, and the different shots used. As well as the styling and looks of the people they want to use.

Once the treatment is completed the directors sends it back to Emily and she shows the Artist and then they pick which directors ideas or style would suit the song and video.

Freak shows

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freak_show
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outcasts

We were told to look into freak shows and outcasts to see if this would give us inspiration or direction for our video.

Our lead singer

As our chosen song is a female singer we decided that we want a solo artist lip singing, we wanted some who is strange but striking looking to sing the part. We have decided that we want the singer not to be doing anything abnormal just the dancers around her. Our lead singer must be visually interesting to look at, the girl singer in Die Antwoord is interesting as she is pretty but also very odd which makes the audience think, which is what we want .

Santi White, known as Santigold is from Philadelphia, she also a very strange and has an alternative style and look.

Response from presenting our ideas to Luke

Our general response from Luke was positive, we told him our song choice (Starstruck- Santigold) and that we wanted our video to be weird and twisted. We then went on to explain our ideas and that our influences are from Die Antwoords videos, they only problem he had with this is that our ideas seemed like they were just taken from Die Antwoords and that it is very hard to pull off weird twisted videos. we were told to look into freak shows and outcasts and it would give us ideas on what sort of way we are going with it as there is so many directions to go with our idea.
He told us to go away and think of a concept we want and come up with more ideas but overall we were happy with the feed back we good as it was pretty positive.

Inspirtation

DIE ANTWOORD--

Our main inspiration the music video for 'I fink your freaky' this is mainly because it is a strange and weird video which is where we are directing to. I think it is generally visually interesting to watch and as there is so much going on.

From watching their videos we have developed a few ideas. Such as using a bath, we don't want to take their ideas completely so we have adapted them, we thought of using a bath full of blood (paint?) which is bubbling and steaming. We also want to use their ideas of having random animals and insects which they also use, I think this would keep the audience interested if we use them in weird scary way.

We found Die Antwoords website which directs straight to their videos as this a publicity stunt to make people watch it, and because their videos are so strange it gets the member of pubic and audiences to talk about them, which is what they want.

first brain storm of ideas as group

Our class has been split up into 2 groups of 4 and 2 groups of 3. For my group I have Alicia, Chessie and me, we decided to go together because I know we all have very similar music interests.

For our first lesson we started brain storming ideas of what sort of style and genre we want to aim for, as a group we decided that we want to aim for an alternative style of music, we have looked in to a few songs which we are interested in;

Ben Pearce- What I might do

Santogold- Starstruck

We have been looking at different music videos to give us inspiration as we decided that we wanted our video to be weird and wacky, one video which inspired us a lot is Die Antwoords video 'I fink your freaky'

For idea wise we have brainstormed a few things we want to have in our video such as, blood, random animals, bath, old people and so on.

Starting A2

For our A2 course we are creating a music video in small groups. During the summer holidays I brain stormed a few ideas of what style and genre I want to look into and then I will speak to the other members of my class and see if anyone else has similar interests.

A background to the music industry and some basic theory

Genre is the classification of the text according to its style and content. Pop is generally the broadest type of genre, although genre are constantly being invented, crossed, mixed up and revisited. When music is put into a categorizes like genres it makes it easier for the customer to find the right style from him/her and also allows them to find other music from different artist which he/she might like.

Theses are the categories that most music would fall into:

   Pop

   Dance

   R&B

   Hip-Hop/Rap

   Rock

   Punk

   Country&Western

   Folk

   Jazz

   Blues

   Latin

   Gospel

   Reggae

   New Age

This is a picture of the girl band ‘Girls Aloud’ who are a ‘shiny trash aesthetic.’ They are a perfect example of a pop group.

After thinking about ideas for my music video it has made me realize that I need to think about what genre music I would like to use as this will help me decide who my target audience would be.

Genre and artist-

Image is a key point and is important to the fans as it also help categorize them before they career even starts, especially synthetic artists who base themselves on their look and not their talent. Once they have been put in genres they start to pick up stereotypes for example Hip/hop rap artists videos consist of, " driving slowly in big old open-topped cars round a generic 'hood, swinging their arms and waving at the booty they pass by".

Adele who is a classic pop style artist is normally photographed wearing classic retro clothing to associate herself with her role models, Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield this gives the audience the impression that she is a serious and soulful artist. This attracts a large audience mainly because she doesn’t come across as fake.
